My All-Time Favorite Cocktail - The French 75

My All-Time Favorite Cocktail - The French 75

IMG_0169.jpg

If you aren’t familiar with the French 75, prepared to feel bougie. It is super simple to put together, but it always takes your drink up a fancy notch. It has gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, St. Germaine, a lemon twist and either champagne or prosecco. Depending on your financial situation, you can have super high end ingredients or keep it balling on a budget.

I had never heard of this drink prior about five years ago. I was recommended to try this drink next time I was out from a former coworker who is from New Orleans. She had said that it would change my life once I had it. Like usual, she was right on the money.

A quick history of how the French 75 came to be. Of course, I would love a vintage cocktail so just bear with me. It actually dates back to World War II. It was created in the New York Bar that was located in Paris, France by Harry MacElhone. The reason behind the name of French 75 was the drink combination was said to have such a kick like the French 75 mm Field Gun. Due to its popularity at the time, it made an appearance in Casablanca (one of my favorite movies).

If you are wanting to try it out, here’s the recipe:

  • 1 ounce of gin

  • ½ ounce of lemon juice

  • ½ ounce of St. Germaine elderflower liqueur

  • ½ ounce of simple syrup

  • Champagne or prosecco to top it off

  • Lemon twist or a garnish of your choice

Put all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with some ice cubes. Shake until your heart’s content and then strain it into a glass. Top the glass off with the champagne of your choice and drop in either a lemon twist or a fancy garnish. In this picture, the bar had added a rosemary sprig.

I hope you get to craft this cocktail soon. Do you have a cocktail that is your ultimate go-to? Either comment below or reach out to hello@spitfireandstarlight.com. I would love to get and read your emails!

Until next time,

Megan
